Chemistry classes first met in 1887 and the department's first professor was E.E. Slossen. The department chair became the State Chemist in 1904 and the graduate program was added in the late 1940s with the first doctorate degrees awarded in 1950. Rhoads, Sara Jane, 1920-

Rhoads (1920-1993) was born in Missouri and graduated from the University of Chicago in 1941 with a B.S. in chemistry and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Columbia University in 1949. She joined the University of Wyoming faculty in 1948 and initiated the undergraduate research program in the Department of Chemistry.
